8 Invaluable Tools To Stop Negative Thinking

Recently I have been overwhelmed by negative thinking. The same old negative thoughts that I am not good enough, I will fail, I am a terrible person, I will never have the life of my dreams, have all arisen with tenacity.

For 2 weeks I let these little demons have centre stage until a few days ago, they had me on my knees and I had absolutely had enough.

Years ago, I would not have even known that these thoughts and beliefs weren’t true, let alone known how to begin transforming them. I feel so deeply grateful that I now have the tools to release them and to re-align myself with my inner peace and joy. After only 3 days of practice, I feel lighter, brighter and more grounded.

8 Invaluable Tools

Each and every one of these tools are miraculous, in other words, they shift you away from a place of fear and bring you back to your fundamental nature of love. These tools are to be practiced consistently in order for them to blossom their full benefits, however even as little as 1 minute of practice can be extremely potent and make great shifts happen within you.

1. Awareness

Noticing your thoughts is imperative to realising that your negative thinking is not in fact true. No matter how powerful a thought may be to you, if it is not based on love and does not bring you deep joy, then it comes from the ‘Ego mind’ and therefore it is not true.

Become aware of the thoughts that you think every day. Literally see Ego-based thoughts as images playing out before your mind and as something separate to who you really are. Acknowledge that they are false and not the truth for you. Replace them with thoughts of love.

2. Positive Affirmations

When we are in the throes of negative thinking, it can be very challenging, however we always have a choice to think loving thoughts instead. So ask yourself ‘how would I love to feel instead?’. Calm, successful, forgiving, loved?

As you notice your negative thinking arise and you identify what you would love to feel instead, actively choose to think those good thoughts and feel the corresponding emotion. Sometimes for example when I notice myself feeling self-hatred, I quickly transform it to ‘I love myself completely as I am’ and I give myself a big hug, feeling the comfort in my own embrace.

3. Mirror-Work

There is something special about holding up a mirror, looking yourself deep in the eyes and telling yourself your positive affirmations. Your Ego-mind has nowhere to hide and you have the opportunity to face your fears straight on and to transform them instantly.

Every morning when you wake up and every evening when you go to sleep at night, tell yourself positive affirmations in the mirror. Allow yourself to say all the things that you know you really need to hear, knowing that you are your own greatest teacher and friend.

Always tell yourself how much you love yourself and really feel that love move through your whole being.

4. Meditation

The more you meditate, the more you see the Ego-mind and all of its negative thinking as a fantasy movie that plays out in your mind which is not true for you. Meditation gives you the space you need from the thoughts in your head and brings you closer to the positivity that you seek.

Set aside a daily meditation practice. It can be as little as 5 minutes or much longer, whatever feels right for you. Allow yourself to move down through the layers of your consciousness and to enjoy the stillness. Know that this state of loving peace is your natural state of being.

5. EFT

By tapping on certain energy meridians within the body, you can clear blocks within yourself and powerfully transform negative thinking. The EFT process is simple, easy and it can be done anywhere.

For a simple guide on how to use EFT and a clear diagram on the tapping points, please see here.

6. Yoga

Yoga actively takes you away from the loud thoughts in your mind by bringing you back to being in the present moment and grounded in your body. It is the practice of letting go and allowing, so the more you practice it, the more you find yourself able to release negative thinking and flow with positivity.

You can either join a weekly Yoga class or you can do it in the privacy of your own home (see these great videos for instruction). As you practise, feel yourself fully present in the moment and at peace. Bring your awareness to letting go of old patterns that do not serve you and open yourself up to the new.

7. Anchor – A Mindfulness Tool

Your Anchor can be whatever you choose it to be e.g. a positive affirmation you have written to yourself and put up on the wall or perhaps an item of jewellery that you wear. The idea of an Anchor is quite simply to ground you, remind you to be mindful of your thoughts and to re-align you with your stillness and love.

Choose your Anchor carefully. Make it something that you will see throughout the day and that will mean something to you. Each time you become aware of your anchor, take a few deep breaths and allow the feelings that you desire (love, calmness, joy – whatever you wish) to enter you.

8. Visualisation

When we visualise what we would ideally love a situation to be like, our imagination releases the corresponding emotion in our minds. Regardless of whether the situation is a reality or it is simply a figment of our imagination, we still feel the same emotion, and that is key. The emotion we feel sends a vibration to the Universe and we attract more of that vibration. So whatever it is you want in your life, by visualising that it is already a reality, you attract it.

If you are for example feeling anxious, take a minute to close your eyes and imagine yourself in a beautiful place of peace. Imagine everything from the sounds around you to the smell of the air. Allow yourself to feel the relaxation and to really let go.
